Duke fights past Florida State, 70-56

The No. 7 Duke Blue Devils overcame a slow start to pull away from the Florida State Seminoles, 70-56.

Jon Scheyer led Duke with 22 points while Kyle Singler poured in 20 more. Nolan Smith struggled, shooting just 4-15 from the floor, and added 11 points.

The Blue Devils got just nine points out of their bench, with Brian Zoubek leading the way with six points.

Duke shot 8-22 from three-point range, while Florida State was just 4-13. That was the big difference in the game.

The victory allows Duke to keep pace with the first-place Maryland Terrapins heading into this weekend’s non-conference showdown with Georgetown.

Duke gets revenge on Clemson, 60-47

The No. 7 Duke Blue Devils bounced back from last year’s embarassment with a 60-47 win over the No. 17 Clemson Tigers.

Both teams exchanged leads in the first half of a very close game, but Duke came out fired up after halftime.

Point guard Nolan Smith fueled a 14-2 run coming out of the locker room that was the difference in the game.

Smith tied a game-high with 22 points, matching the total of Clemson forward Trevor Booker.

The win helps to erase some of the painful memory of last year’s embarassing, 74-47 loss at Clemson.

Duke upset by N.C. State, 88-74

The Duke Blue Devils continued their road struggles with an 88-74 loss to the North Carolina State Wolfpack.

Duke fell behind early but rallied back to cut the deficit to three by halftime thanks to a crazy three-point shot from Nolan Smith right before the buzzer sounded.

It seemed like Duke would come out ready to play and go on one of their patented runs to put the game away.

Instead, the Blue Devils came out flat and sluggish, and the Wolfpack was the team that went on the big run.

Kyle Singler played better and led the team with 22 points, but he still isn’t shooting well from the outside.

Duke pulls away from Boston College, 79-59

The Duke Blue Devils overcame a sluggish first half to pull away from the Boston College Eagles, 79-59.

Duke held just a three-point lead at halftime and looked much like the team that had lost a few days earlier at Georgia Tech.

They finally got things going in the second half by turning up the defensive pressure and causing turnovers.

Nolan Smith was the catalyst on both ends of the court, and he finished with a team-high 24 points.

Smith picked up some of the slack for Jon Scheyer, who scored just 12 points on 4-12 shooting.

Cutcliffe remaining at Duke

Duke Blue Devils head coach David Cutcliffe said he will remain at the school and not take the job at Tennessee.

Cutcliffe was formerly the offensive coordinator with the Volunteers under Phillip Fulmer until taking the Duke job.

He said he took a lot of time to make the decision with his wife, but they decided that Duke was the place for them.

He said he feels that they have the best coaching staff in the country and are on their way to building a successful program.

Cutcliffe is 9-15 in two seasons with the Blue Devils, who won just 10 games in the prior eight years.
