On a conference call with reporters on Wednesday, former Duke point guard Greg Paulus attributed his time at Duke to a predecessor to future success as the starting QB with Syracuse this year.
He promised to bring the work ethic and winning culture that he learned from Duke’s head coach, Mike Krzyzewski, according to ESPN.
Paulus was named the starting QB this week by Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone, after only one week of practice. Paulus graduated from Duke early and received a waiver from the NCAA to play football for ‘Cuse as a graduate student.
“Having the experience and the opportunity to play for Coach K and Duke, it prepared me for everything,” Paulus said. “Playing in a lot of big games and playing in that type of atmosphere has allowed me to learn from that culture, to build on some of the things I had in high school and I’m trying to bring some of that here to Syracuse.”
In high school, Paulus was a Parade All-American and record setting quarterback in Syracuse, before pursuing basketball at Duke.

Dukies will have to share their beloved Coach K for four more years, as ESPN.com is reporting that Mike Krzyzewski has committed to remain coach of the USA national team at the 2010 world championship in Turkey and the 2012 Olympics in London.
Team USA formally announced Coach K’s return at the start of their mini-camp in late July.
With eight players most likely returning from the gold medal-winning 2008 team - Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Chris Bosh and Carmelo Anthony - Coach K entered Team USA camp looking to narrow down a group of 25 players into a most-likely four roster spots.
By accepting the job, Coach K has a chance to fill one of the few holes left on his coaching resume. He is currently 0-for-2 in world championships, finishing in third place in 1990.
An ESPN report by Chris Sheridan reports Coach Krzyzewski as saying,
“What I told my family was, I could imagine being there in Turkey and London, and I know I’d say to myself: ‘I know I should be down on the sidelines,’ and I’d regret that,” Krzyzewski said.
“That would be the biggest loss — that’s how I envisioned it.”
